“I’m not homeless, I’m Bobby”
Last Sunday was a chilly and blustery one, but our hearts were warmed by hope and connection with our friends on the Ave. Berk, Davy, Eddy, Jeff, Jesus, and Ronnie were joined on the streets by Annalise Quinn of the Boston Globe. Annalise is working on an article about people who are missing on Mass Ave. She has now been to the Ave many times, and her dedication to truly understanding people’s stories continues to inspire us. It was great to have Eddy back from his semester o

Memorial Day is one of the most somber days in the calendar. It is not just a day off for barbecues and backyard parties. It is a day to remember and to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of this country. One way to honor their memories and continue the legacy of service is to take part in serving our communities, to help our neighbors, to lend a hand to those in need, and to bring hope, comfort, and healing to our neighbors who need us most. This past

Healing begins with human connection. Last Sunday, our outreach event had seven incredible volunteers. Each brings unique life experiences and talents to share with our friends living on Boston’s streets. As we set up the BRF wagons with clothes, sandwiches, fruit, and snacks, we often encounter people who are tired and hurting. Sometimes, the physical pain is evident, while the emotional pain is more profound. Our volunteers offer smiles, brownies, fruit, or water to every

Springtime service with our neighbors on the streets
With temperatures climbing in Boston, more individuals on the streets are seeking our assistance. On Sunday, we provided 125 people with tasty items such as fresh fruit, brownies, banana bread, turkey, roast beef, cheese sandwiches, and more. Instead of handing out winter coats, we are now offering T-shirts, shorts, underwear, socks, and rain ponchos to help keep people and their belongings dry. We've observed an increase in individuals experiencing skin infections and other

Mother's Day on the Ave
This Sunday, Berk, Davy, Jack, Jeff, Jennifer, and Ronnie were joined by three wonderful new volunteers: Alix, Ellie, and Shifra. We were so grateful to have them with us, bringing fresh energy and heartfelt kindness to our friends on the streets. Mother’s Day can be a complicated and emotional time on Mass Ave. Many women we meet are separated from their children, and that pain runs deep. At Boston Recovery Foundation, we approach this day with care and compassion. We strive

Spreading Smiles on Mass Ave
After a long, cold winter, the warm days and new growth of spring are in full force. This week, Berk, Brooke, Davy, Jeff, and Ronnie were joined on Mass Ave by our newest volunteer, Lynda! We met Lynda the day before at Wake Up the Earth in Jamaica Plain. We are so grateful that she brought her warmth and infectious smile to people on the streets! The volunteers served over 100 people on Sunday, starting to distribute warm weather clothes like t shirts, shorts, along with the

Community Engagement at Wake Up the Earth
On Saturday, Berk, Davy, John, and Ronnie tabled at the Wake Up the Earth festival in Jamaica Plain. We are thrilled to have Ronnie a a BRF ambassador. Ronnie struggled with substance use disorder for 14 years, going in and out of detox and residential programs. After completing a locked substance use treatment program, Ronnie is sober and engaging in a halfway house program. Ronnie's total compassion for others suffering from substance use disorder comes from his understandi

Easter on the Ave
The bright sun wasn’t all that brought warmth to Mass Ave on Easter Sunday. On this day that we celebrate new hope, Berk, Akira, Eddy, and Davy of the Boston Recovery Foundation worked alongside volunteers from the Boston Backpack Project to distribute food and clothing items. The food offerings came with a couple of fun surprises in the form of banana cake and chocolate Easter eggs. Eddy held court as the frosting dealer while the other volunteers served over 100 people. We

Hope Dealers in the rain
The weather didn’t cooperate with us on Sunday, but we didn’t let that dampen our spirits. We braved the rain to serve the people who rely on us. We had a variety of food options, including roast beef and cheese sandwiches, turkey and cheese sandwiches, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, peanut butter and fluff sandwiches, strawberries, grapes, bananas, homemade brownies (they loved the brownies), chocolates, warm clothing items and rain ponchos. We were at Mass Ave., Bradst

Faces of Hope on Mass Ave
Every Sunday, The Boston Recovery Foundation serves over one hundred people. While we distribute clothing, food, and other items, the greatest gift the volunteers bring to those suffering on the streets is the human connection, the human conversation, and the dignity they offer. It’s evident to us that people have a genuine desire to share their stories, both heartbreaking and heartwarming, and to be heard with compassion and without judgment. Our team is a beacon of love and

Thank you United Methodist Church Neodesha, Kansas!
We deeply appreciate the United Methodist Church Neodesha KS for your generous donation of clothing, including handmade items that recipients wore with pride, with some expressing feelings of unworthiness for such generosity and love. While we supply food and clothing, the most significant gifts we provide are the conversations we have with individuals confronting addiction challenges. Your participation is truly inspiring, and we thank you sincerely.

Thank you Boston Bulldogs Running Club!
Our gratitude to the @bostonbulldogsrunning, who joined us on Mass. Ave. on Sunday. Those Bulldogs make recovery look good. They assisted in bringing food and clothing and other necessities to the street. The human connections were the most important gifts. It was truly an inspiration to see each volunteer interacting with someone who is struggling. The compassion and understanding is truly an example of what it means to be wounded healer. Shout out to Meaghan and the Boston

Saturday Celebration with Boston Backpack Project
This past Saturday Jack and Berk of the Boston recovery foundation were fortunate enough to join the Boston Backpack Project on Mass Ave. in Boston. It was a moving experience serving alongside so many wonderful volunteers while honoring the memory of those we have lost in the fight against substance use disorder. There were backpacks, clothing, delicious food, but most importantly, lots of love. Shout out to Elaine Mitrano for her vision and leadership of this special projec

Happy St. Patricks Day!
St. Patrick's Day didn't prevent Eddie and Berk from celebrating the Boston Recovery Foundation in Jamaica Plain. We set up a table to talk about removing the stigma surrounding addiction. People interested in the topic gathered information from our table and engaged in some deeply personal discussions.

This past Sunday, the weather was milder, but our friends living on the streets still required warm clothing. We consider not only the daytime temperatures but also the nighttime chill when there’s no refuge from the cold. Our wonderful volunteers distributed clothing, shoes, sandwiches, snacks, water, and fresh fruit to about 100 people. Grapes, strawberries, and bananas are treats that people can’t get enough of. While people appreciate these essential gifts and treats, the

Black Balloon Day - Overdose Awareness
Today, we released black balloons, not only as a symbol of loss but also as a declaration that we will not allow addiction to take more of our brothers and sisters, parents, children, and friends. Too many lives have been prematurely ended. Too many families have faced an empty seat at the table, a call that never arrives, a heartbreak that never heals. Addiction knows no boundaries. We do not stand here powerless. We stand as warriors, as advocates, as voices for those who c

We enjoyed a fantastic day on the streets of Boston, and we’re thankful for our incredible volunteers, who are the heart of this mission. Henry, Justin, Matty, and Davy prepared over 100 sandwiches before 10 AM. A special thanks to our great friend Ed, whose truck made this event possible. It's always inspiring to witness the interaction between our volunteers and those we serve, remembering each other’s names and sharing stories of sorrow and healing. Although we distribute

Today, right after one of the largest snowstorms of the season, our dedicated and compassionate volunteers ventured into the streets of Boston to do what they excel at. After loading the wagons with over 150 sandwiches, including pulled pork, pulled chicken, peanut butter and jelly, and peanut butter and fluff, along with hundreds of snacks and winter clothing, they navigated through the snow-covered sidewalks. The cold was harsh, especially for those whose clothing was wet a

Berk participated in the Locked In Solidarity conference at High Rock Church in Arlington, which aimed to raise awareness about reentry challenges, maintain the conversation, and unify resources to aid successful transitions for individuals being released from incarceration. Research indicates that approximately 80% of incarcerated individuals have a history of substance use disorder, and 70% have a mental health history. Additionally, untreated trauma is prevalent among the
