Memorial Day is one of the most somber days in the calendar. It is not just a day off for barbecues and backyard parties. It is a day to remember and to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of this country.

One way to honor their memories and continue the legacy of service is to take part in serving our communities, to help our neighbors, to lend a hand to those in need, and to bring hope, comfort, and healing to our neighbors who need us most. This past Sunday, volunteers with the Boston Recovery Foundation made their way to the streets of Boston armed with 150 sandwiches (roast, beef, turkey, peanut butter and jelly, peanut butter and fluff), hundreds of other snacks and fresh fruit,  much needed new socks, underwear and other clothing. The compassionate and dignified way with which our volunteers interact with the people we serve is always heartwarming. Many of the over 100 people that we helped on Sunday are themselves US veterans who today are living on the streets.

On this Memorial Day, let’s remember that we can all do something to serve a fellow human being. We can all be beacons of hope.
