Today, right after one of the largest snowstorms of the season, our dedicated and compassionate volunteers ventured into the streets of Boston to do what they excel at. After loading the wagons with over 150 sandwiches, including pulled pork, pulled chicken, peanut butter and jelly, and peanut butter and fluff, along with hundreds of snacks and winter clothing, they navigated through the snow-covered sidewalks. The cold was harsh, especially for those whose clothing was wet and snow-covered. Henry, Davy, and Matty ensured that everyone they encountered received a hat, gloves, a coat, a scarf, hand warmers, and anything else needed to keep them warm. Referrals to detox were made, and a young man living on the street used the BRF phone to call his mother, who was unaware of his whereabouts. He was able to arrange with his mother for residential treatment. We will follow up with him.
Jeanette Parent, a lady we met on Mass Ave, shared her ongoing medical issues and struggles with substance use disorder. After providing her with clothing and food, we encouraged her to visit BMC for her medical needs. We assured her of our support should she choose to seek treatment and gave her our phone number. On Monday the 10th, Berk received a call from a Boston Medical Center social worker stating that Jeanette had been admitted for treatment and was being transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital to address serious medical issues and undergo detox. On Tuesday the 11th, Brooke spoke with Jeanette and agreed to bring her some clothing and toiletries. Clothing was purchased at Marshall’s, and Berk delivered them to Jeanette at the hospital. On Thursday the 13th, Henry, on behalf of BRF, called Jeanette to check on her. She seemed determined to continue her treatment. We will continue to follow up with her.
